Pepper spray, also known as oleoresin capsicum (OC), is a natural substance derived from the oily resins found in cayenne and other varieties of pepper. Contact with pepper spray in a sprayed mist will cause an immediate and intense burning sensation of the skin and will cause the eyes to slam shut, burn, tear, and swell. Also, the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and sinuses burn, swell and make breathing difficult.  This temporary blindness and difficulty to breathe causes fear and disorientation allowing you to escape and get help.
